We want to alert our clients to a phishing scam currently targeting Ohio taxpayers. Several of our clients have reported receiving suspicious text messages claiming to be from the Ohio Department of Taxation (ODT), requesting that recipients click a link to verify personal information.
This is a scam. The Ohio Department of Taxation has confirmed they do NOT communicate with taxpayers via text message.
Here’s what you need to know:
Red Flags to Watch For:
- Text messages claiming to be from the ODT
- Requests to click links to “verify” personal information
- Urgent language pressuring you to act quickly
If You Receive One of These Messages:
- Do NOT click any links
- Do NOT provide personal information
- Delete the message immediately
- If you’re unsure about any communication claiming to be from a government agency, contact them directly through their official channels
Timing Matters: With tax season in full swing, scammers are exploiting the fact that taxpayers expect to hear from tax authorities. This makes these fraudulent messages particularly dangerous right now.
Stay Protected: Legitimate government agencies, including the ODT, will communicate through official mail or their secure online portals—never through unsolicited text messages requesting personal information.
If you have questions about any tax-related communications you’ve received, don’t hesitate to contact our team. We’re here to help you navigate tax season safely and securely.
At Rea, protecting our clients extends beyond tax preparation—it includes keeping you informed about threats that could compromise your financial security.
